Digital manipulation by Dutch artists like Inez Van Lamsweerde or Gerald Van Der Kaap whose photographs deal with the body by means of mutation or levitation (see "Photography after Photography") is inherent to an urge of contemporary photography to question the medium of the photographic genre.

Cor Dera

Cor Dera who, like Inez van Lamsweerde and Gerald Van Der Kaap, is part of the artists at the Torch Gallery in Amsterdam, thinks about art and nature in contemporary society. As he explains in "Art is Dead. Long Live Nature", his work relies on the recuperation of images about nature. Clippings from natural history books these images are presented in an installation as little colourful squares which provide rhythm to an otherwise white surface. Cor Dera plays on the dichotomy art / nature by referring to his fellow countryman Pet Mondrian. It must be pointed out that Mondrian, in his series on trees progressively freed himself from nature to purify and simplify the lines and shapes of his paintings. Thus purified, each painting is only a part of a much more complex system in which elements follow each other and link up with each other.
