Memory Lab – Traces at Cercle Cité

The photographs of this exhibition refer historically to very different conflicts: the trenches of the first world war are the subject of Jonathan Olley’s photographs. Henning Rogge is spotting the remaining craters of the Second World War in the German provinces. What these works have in common – if you compare with the photographs of Tatiana Lecomte and Sarah Schoenfeld – is that all images refer to conflicts that are not really or only partially visible in the image. Nothing evokes the barbarity of war unless it solicits the memory and historical knowledge of the visitor. Even recent history through photos of Attila Flozsmann (the conflict in Libya) or the tapestries or “knit-wear “ of Tania Boukal ( she evokes the situation of the immigrants or war refugees ) only point to events and conflicts rather than openly addressing them as would do a war photographer or correspond. These images track reality; but their power resides on the capacity to kindle emotions should we fail to remember what happened.

Les photographies qu’on peut voir dans cette exposition se réfèrent historiquement à des conflits très divers : pour Jonathan Olley, les tranchés de la 1ere guerre mondiale forment le sujet de ses photographies, pour Henning Rogge, ce sont les cratères de la deuxième guerre mondiale. Ce que ces travaux ont de commun avec le travail de Tatiana Lecomte et Sarah Schoenfeld, c’est que les événements y sont comme absents. Rien n’y évoque plus la barbarie de la guerre sauf si on sollicite sa mémoire… ou quand on a des connaissances historiques. Même l’histoire récente, à travers les photos d’Attila Flozsmann ( le conflit en Lybie ) ou les tableaux « tricotés » de Tania Boukal qui évoque les soulèvements dans les pays arabes ou le sort des immigrés ou réfugiés de guerre, ne retiennent des événements que des images qui sont autant de traces de ce qui s’est véritablement passé. Memory lab: 4 exhibitions, one theme

As part of the 5th edition of The European Month of Photography in Luxembourg (in partnership with the cities of Athens, Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Paris and Vienna), one of the highlights is the “Memory Lab: Photography challlenges History “ exhibition in four different venues.
Subtitled “Photography Challenges History: Re-writing “ the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art Grand Duc Jean (Mudam) welcomes the works of David Birkin, Broomberg and Chanarin Antony Cairns, Vera Frenkel, Tatiana Lecomte and Gábor Osz. The National Museum of History and Art’s (MNHA) exhibition – subtitled Memory Lab II – Challenges Photography History: Past, Present shows the works of Erwin Olaf, Bettina Rheims, Silvio Galassi, Antoine d’Agata, Adrien Pezennec, Andreas Mühe, Lina Scheynius, Gerhes Gabor and Vee Speers.
The Cercle Ratskeller venue Memory Lab III – Photography Challenges History: Traces exhibits works by Henning Rogge, Tanja Boukal Tatiana Lecomte, Attila Floszmann, Sarah Schönfeld and Jonathan Olley. Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain presents Memory Lab IV – Photography Challenges History: Transit with works by Adrian Paci, Aura Rosenberg and Vladmir Nikolić from 25 April 2015.
Memory Lab, Photography challenges History addresses the theme of memory and history through contemporary photography. How does contemporary photography deal with the past, including the events that characterize Europe and its history, conflicts and major wars? Photography has long since passed its registration status and today combines fiction and reality in different ways through personal sensitivity, ironic distancing and analytical subjectivity.

Dans le cadre de la 5e édition du Mois européen de la photographie au Luxembourg (en partenariat avec les villes d’Athènes, Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Paris et Vienne), Café-Crème asbl présente sous le thème de Memory Lab – Photography Challenges History une exposition qui se décline en quatre parties selon les différents lieux.
Avec Memory Lab I – Photography Challenges History : Ré-écritures le Musée d’art moderne Grand-Duc Jean (Mudam) accueille les œuvres de David Birkin, Broomberg et Chanarin, Antony Cairns, Vera Frenkel, Tatiana Lecomte et Gábor Osz dès le 8 mars 2015. Au Musée national d’Histoire et d’Art (MNHA) aura lieu l’exposition Memory Lab II – Photography Challenges History : Passé, présent avec les œuvres de Erwin Olaf, Bettina Rheims, Silvio Galassi, Antoine d’Agata, Adrien Pezennec, Andreas Mühe, Lina Scheynius, Gerhes Gabor et Vee Speers à partir du 24 avril 2015.
